Peter Scarlet es conocido como uno de los más respetados organizadores y programadores de la escena internacional. Entre los años 1983 y 2001, Scarlet estuvo al frente del Festival Internacional de Cine de San Francisco (STIFF). Durante su gestión, el STIFF obtuvo la primera exhibición en los Estados Unidos de múltiples nuevos directores que luego alcanzaron la fama mundial: Jane Campion, Alexei German, Mike Leigh, Guy Maddin, Christopher Nolan, Pablo Trapero, Kira Muratova, Walter Salles, Tsai Ming-Liang, Jia Zhangke, entre otros. En el año 2001, Scarlet dejó San Francisco luego de ser nombrado Director General de la Cinemateca Francesa. En el 2003, volvió a los Estados Unidos como Director Artístico del Festival de Cine de Tribeca en Nueva York. Scarlet logró incrementar de manera muy especial la presencia del cine internacional en su programa y ayudó a posicionar este joven evento como uno de los más reconocidos festivales de Norte América. Luego de 6 años en Nueva York, Scarlet se mudó a los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, siguiendo la invitación del gobierno de Abu Dhabi para hacerse cargo del Festival de Cine de Abu Dhabi. Durante su gestión como Director Ejecutivo del mismo, dicho evento se ganó el reconocimiento como “el festival de cine más influyente de Oriente Medio” y uno de los mejores en el mundo.
Desde este año, Scarlet ha sido nombrado Director Artístico del Festival Internacional de Mar del Plata en Argentina.
Long one of the most respected film festival organizers and programmers on the international scene, Peter Scarlet was at the helm from 1983-2001 of the San Francisco International Film Festival. During his tenure there, SFIFF featured the first US screenings of films by many directors who were then little known but later became world famous, ranging from Jane Campion, Alexei German, Mike Leigh, Guy Maddin, Christopher Nolan and Pablo Trapero to Kira Muratova, Walter Salles, Tsai Ming-Liang and Jia Zhangke. Invited to become Director General of the Cinémathèque Française, Scarlet left San Francisco in 2001. In 2003 he returned to the U.S. to serve as Artistic Director of NYC’s Tribeca Film Festival. Scarlet greatly increased the presence of international cinema in the program, and helped establish the young event as one of the major North American film festivals. After six years in New York, Scarlet moved to the U.A.E., following an invitation by the government of Abu Dhabi to take over a film festival it had instituted two years earlier, His subsequent three years as Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival saw its innovative programs command widespread attention, and the event earned recognition as “the most influential film festival in the Middle East” and one of the best in the world.
Since this year, Scarlet has been named Artistic Director of Argentina´s Mar del Plata International Film Festival.
